DETECTIVES LOOKING TO IDENTIFY DECEASED MAN

On October 12, 2022, the body of a man was found in the wooded area of Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary near the intersection of Douglas Street and Haynes Road. We shared initial information on this discovery on October 13th.

Detectives in our Major Crime Unit have been working to identify this man, however, at this time his identity remains unknown. We are now seeking assistance from the public for any information they may have that could help us learn who this man was.

While we don’t have many details to share, we can say the following:

  • He was an adult male
  • Approximately 5’10” and 160 lbs
  • He was believed to be experiencing homelessness
  • He was living in a two-toned silver and teal tent
  • There was a dark blue tarp over the tent
  • There were several bicycles in the area of the tent
  • There were no personal items in the immediate area that would help us identify him

The BC Coroner’s Service is also conducting its own fact-finding investigation and the death is being investigated by police as not suspicious.

“We know that this is somebody’s loved one so we’re hoping anyone with information will come forward and speak with our investigators,” said Const. Markus Anastasiades. “We are sharing a photo of the tent and sleeping bag in an effort to identify the man, as these were only a few of the identifiable items found at the scene.”

Investigators are asking anyone with information about this man’s identity to call the Saanich Police Department at 250-475-4356 or toll-free at 1-888-980-1919. You can also report anonymously through the Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-888-222-8477.
