Driver Charged after Series of Dangerous Driving Incidents

On June 29, at approximately 6:30am the Saanich Police received a report of a White Mitsubishi RVR being driven in a dangerous manner southbound on West Saanich Road. The vehicle was reported to have almost left the roadway multiple times, struck a curb, and was being driven in the oncoming traffic lane. An officer responded to the area but was unable to locate the vehicle. A CRD wide notification about the vehicle was sent out to other jurisdictions.

Over the next few hours, the same vehicle was reported to have been involved in several dangerous driving incidents in other police jurisdictions on the Saanich Peninsula. The incidents included failing to stop for police officers and near collisions with civilian and police vehicles.

At approximately 9:30am the Mitsubishi was once again located in Saanich’s jurisdiction, where it was involved in several more incidents of dangerous driving.

Due to the drivers’ disregard for public safety the decision was made to authorise intentional contact with the Mitsubishi if a safe location presented itself.

Just before 10am, three Saanich Police vehicles made intentional contact with the Mitsubishi in the southbound lanes of the Pat Bay Hwy., just south of Sayward Road. The officers were able to pin the vehicle against a barrier and prevent it from fleeing.

The driver, Jason Speare, was arrested and has been charged with the following:

  • Possession of Stolen Property over $5000.00
  • Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance
  • Flight from Police

He remains in custody with a future court date later this week.
