Saanich Police Warn Public After Series of Distraction Thefts inShelbourne Corridor

The Saanich Police Department is issuing a public warning following a series of distraction thefts that have occurred in the Shelbourne corridor over the past three weeks. Three separate incidents have been reported, each involving suspects using deceptive tactics to steal valuable jewellery from unsuspecting victims in broad daylight.

In each case, suspects—often posing as tourists or individuals in distress—approached victims with emotional appeals or offers of jewellery. These interactions involved physical closeness, such as hugging or placing items on the victim, during which valuable personal jewellery was discreetly removed. The suspects then fled the scene.

The victims, ranging in age and background, reported feeling confused, frozen, or overwhelmed during the encounters—common psychological responses in distraction based crimes. The stolen items included high-value gold chains and pendants, with losses totaling over $7,000. These incidents align with a broader trend of distraction thefts reported across British Columbia, and investigators believe the suspects may be linked to organized groups operating in the region. Saanich Police continue to investigate and are working with regional partners to identify those responsible.

“These incidents are deeply concerning—not only because of the financial loss, but because they target people’s trust and sense of safety,” said Inspector Damian Kowalewich. “We want the public to be aware of these tactics so they can protect themselves and their loved ones. If something feels off, trust your instincts and disengage, then call police.”

Safety Tips to Avoid Distraction Thefts:

  • Be cautious of strangers who approach you with unusual requests or offers.
  • If you feel uncomfortable, leave the area and report the interaction to police.
  • Trust your instincts—if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.
