UPDATE: VIIMCU Investigates Homicide

On January 5, 2026, the Saanich Police Major Crime Unit began investigating a suspicious death that occurred inside a residence in the 1600 block of Blair Avenue. Later that day, the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) assumed conduct of the investigation.

A suspect was taken into custody on January 5, 2026. Due to the early stages of the investigation, charges were not sworn, and the suspect was released without charge on January 6, 2026. While the suspect was in the community, measures were taken to ensure he was not a danger to himself or others.

On January 9, 2026, members of VIIMCU arrested the suspect, Muhammed Basar. He has since been charged with murder. Mr. Basar remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on January 21, 2026

As the investigation is now with the BC Prosecution Service no further details will be released.
