COMMUNITY UPDATE TO DERELICT BOATS IN CADBORO BAY

Since early June, officers have been working with the community and partner agencies to address not only the derelict boats in the waters of Cadboro Bay but also reports of an uptick in criminal property offences connected to persons living on these boats.

Over the course of the investigation, two men were observed to be connected to the boats and crime in the area. Police were able to recommend charges and request warrants for their arrests.

Both Thomas Cudworth and Jack Chisholm have since been arrested for numerous property offences and remain in custody.

On Tuesday, October 11, 2022, the Saanich Police Dive Team was able to deploy in the waters around a large “water world” of joined boats as part of this continued investigation. The divers were able to document pollution and debris that they suspect belong to these boats and the owner. Police have made contact with the owner and the investigation remains ongoing.

“We want the community to understand that we are taking this seriously and the investigation is progressing, ” said Cst. Markus Anastasiades. “We continue to ask residents in the area to report all suspicious activities they observe to the police.”

Anyone with information can contact the Saanich Police Department at 250-475-4321, or report what they know anonymously through the Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
