On May 23, 2025, just before 8pm, a Saanich police officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the 700 block of Claremont Rd. The vehicle did not stop and instead took off at a high rate of speed. Our officers did not pursue. Instead, additional officers flooded the area in an attempt to locate the vehicle.
A short time later the vehicle was discovered unoccupied in the 5000 block of Del Monte Ave. With the assistance of the Integrated Canine Service (ICS), officers began searching the area for the driver, who was found hiding in a bush on private property. He surrendered and was taken into custody without incident.
Due to the strong smell of alcohol emanating from the driver, officers formed grounds to demand a breath sample from the man, the result of which was a FAIL.
This matter remains under investigation, but officers anticipate recommending to Crown the driver be charged with the following criminal offenses:
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
- Impaired operation of a conveyance
- Impaired operation of a conveyance over .08
- Flight from peace officer
- Breach of release order
- Possession of property obtained by crime
The driver remains in custody pending a future court appearance.
