Off the Ice, On the Road: Junior Hockey Players Learn Safe Driving Habits

The Saanich Police Department is working with teams in the Southern Division of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) to deliver an important message: safe driving saves lives.

Players are taking part in interactive presentations hosted by our Traffic Safety Unit that focus on responsible driving Off the Ice. The sessions cover topics such as:

  • How junior hockey players are predisposed to high-risk decision-making.
  • The impact of poor driving behaviour on maintaining a driver’s license and insurance.
  • The dangers of impaired and distracted driving

Supported by the CRD Traffic Safety Commission, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), and Kirby’s Source for Sports, this initiative reflects a shared commitment to reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities in our community.

“Our goal is to help these young athletes understand that the choices they make behind the wheel can have lifelong consequences. By starting the conversation early, we hope to build safer habits both on and off the ice.” | Staff Sergeant Doug Cripps, SPD Traffic Safety Unit
